Outreach Program
Upcoming Dates
The Materials Engineering Outreach Program is designed to increase awareness of materials engineering. Each year, a group of students create presentations which they bring to both elementary and high school classes. The presentation includes Power Point slides, interactive demonstrations, and an informational quiz. The goal of our program is to increase the interest of K-12 students in science and engineering. The presentation explains the basics of materials engineering is, what we do and learn in school, and the significance of engineering in our society. We include examples and demonstrationss of both everyday applications and new and innovative research being done in the field of materials engineering. We recently started an alumni outreach program. Please contact Dr. Kathy Chen if you are interested in participating in our alumni outreach program. In 2004 we won the national ASM/AIST/TMS World Materials Day award for our outreach program. Several students wrote a paper about our outreach activities. The paper included information about our presentation, our demonstrations, the events we have participated in, and the wonderful response we have received from classes we have visited.
